Holbein's illustration shown in Plate 29 from Moriae Encomium is associated with the same text drawn from

John Wilson's 1668 translation as noted for Plate 28, namely:

Of this college also are they who in their lifetime appoint with what solemnity they'll be buried,

and particularly set down how many torches, how many mourners, how many singers, how

many almsmen they will have at it; as if any sense of it could come to them, or that it were a

shame to them that their corpse were not honorably interred; so curious are they herein, as if,

like the aediles of old, these were to present some shows or banquet to the people.

The associated French text from L'Eloge de la Folie (1728) follows:

Un petit mot 'dun autre classe de Fous: ce seroit grand dommage de les oublier; ils sont trop

d'honneur à mon Empire. Je parle de ces Riches, qui se voyant à le sin de leur carriere,

ordonnent de grands préparatifs pour pouvoir fair magnifiquement le voyage du tombeau.

C'est un plaisir de voir ces Mourans s'appliquer férieusement à régler leur pompe funebre:

ils vuelent qu'il y ait à leurs funerailles, de flambeux, de gens en deil, de Chantres, de Pleureurs

& c. Ne seront0ils pas bien glorieux, d'aller en terre avec un superbe convoi? Ils s'en font un

plaisir d'avance, ne paroissant pas tout à fait persuadez que la mort leur ôtera toute

connoissance & tout sentiment. Il n'est ni honorable, ni agréable, à un Riche défunt, qu'on

enserre son cadavre comme celie d'un Gueux. Enfin,  il semble que cet homme-là regarde la

more comme une Charge d'Edile, Magistrature de l'ancienne Rome, qui donnoit inspection

sur les festine & sur les divertissmens du Peuple.
